About a year ago I posted about the status of the island of Puerto Rico. Well, in the ending months of 2006, there is new news about this issue again now being heard in the US Senate committee. Once again there is still a major issue here in that the people who want Commonwealth, Statehood, and Independence(t) just can't agree with one solution to this problem.

I don't know to me I just think it should become Statehood it's been a long time coming, but at the same time Commonwealth is still wanted by the majority of the people so there really isn't much that can be done. Maybe they should have another major vote again to really see where the people stand at this point. I guess we'll have to wait and see what happens yet again.

All this talk of bi-partisanship, working together with republicans makes me laugh, because these liberals are so power hungry, they will do anything to achieve power, so it wouldn't surprise me if they try to make an effort to impeach the president. 2,996 Tribute-Thomas J. Celic

Here we are again..September 11, 2006. Five years later. So much has changed since then in our lives and the world, but one thing will never change is the memory of this tragic day of the 2,996 innocent lives lost. Though it's been five years, just the thought of that day still feels too near. It's like if it had just happened yesterday, and I was 18 then, still in school at the time and on this day a voice on the PA system goes on with an announcement by explaining on what had happened in NYC that morning. Just the expressions alone on all the teachers faces said it all. It was total confusion, and by the time I had come home that's when it hit me. Talking to my family, the fear I had, the thoughts racing through my mind of what was happening, questions to be answered, the coverage on TV. There was just this empty eery feeling I had that I will never forget.

As I sit here reading and putting together the information I have found on the life of Thomas J. Celic, that empty feeling I had this day five years ago was there again. I didn't know this man, but I had that sense of sadness and anger. Thomas J. Celic had a way of making people around him whether it be family or friends laugh. What I found interesting, was that Thomas was a Cross-country runner who raced in many marathons including the NYC Marathon finishing in the top 300. I find it interesting because my dad too is a runner and had been in local marathons as well for many years. Thoma's brother Marty Celic, in which he had learned and got his passion in running from, was killed while in line of duty as a NYC Fire Fighter in 1977. Thomas was 43, and a resident of New York, NY working at Marsh & McLennan Cos. Inc as a Senior Vice Pres. in the World Trade Center. He is survived by his wife, Roseanne Celic who were married at the ages of 19 and 17. Thomas loved his family, he was very close with both his own and Mrs. Celic's family.

This was most on what I could find about Thomas J. Celic, though it wasn't a lot, but it was just enough for me to know and to let all of you know that he was a family man, funny, and athletic. He cared and loved those around him, and made each and everyone of them laugh and smile. He left many good memories that I have read on many memorial sites from those who knew him well that they will never forget. I am honored to do this tribute along with the many great bloggers in making sure that he and all those who died on September 11, 2001 will NEVER be forgotten.

U.S. Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid called for the resignation of Homeland Security Department Secretary Michael Chertoff on Wednesday, one day after the government dropped Las Vegas from a list of cities considered potential high-risk targets eligible for special anti-terrorism grants.

Reid, D-Nev., joins Clark County Sheriff Bill Young in calling for Chertoff to step down as a result of the decision jeopardizing millions in additional federal funding that Nevada currently receives as a result of being considered a potential terrorist target.

"Anyone who can't see that Las Vegas is a high-risk area doesn't deserve to serve in a position like that," Reid said.

"We had more visitors on New Year's Eve than they had in Times Square and we're not a high-risk area? For heaven's sakes."

Las Vegas and 10 other cities previously categorized as "high threat" fell behind 35 areas declared eligible this year for special grants earmarked by the Department of Homeland Security.

Las Vegas received $8 million in 2005 through such high-threat funding to purchase a spectrometer to detect chemical agents, special clothing, chemical response vehicles, handheld computers for emergency personnel to communicate, a bomb robot and a bomb armored vehicle, according to the Clark County Office of Emergency Management.

Chertoff defended the scaled-back approach as one that focuses federal grants on those areas most needing to make preparations, with the 35 locations decided by 3.2 billion calculations aimed at determining regions most susceptible to terrorism.

On Tuesday, Young called Chertoff "impossible" to deal with regarding the needs of a major tourist destination, one that last year played host to nearly 40 million visitors.

As evidence of risk, Young noted documented visits to Las Vegas before the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks by five of the airplane hijackers, revelations in a Detroit terrorism case that terrorists had plotted to strike Las Vegas, and a 2003 New Year's Eve threat alert under which hotels and airlines were asked by the government to turn over customer lists.

Reid said Chertoff previously proved himself an inappropriate director with his lumbering response to Hurricane Katrina .

Said Reid: "He did a lousy job on Katrina."

Doctors placed Sharon on a respirator and were trying to save his life only hours before the hard-charging, overweight, 77-year-old Israeli leader had been scheduled to undergo a procedure to seal a hole in his heart that contributed to a mild stroke on Dec. 18.

Jan. 4 (Bloomberg) -- Twelve miners died following an explosion at a West Virginia mine Jan. 2, with only one man surviving, the company said today. The news emerged just hours after reports suggested that 12 of the men had survived.

At a press conference carried live by international broadcasters, International Coal Group Inc. President and Chief Executive Officer Ben Hatfield said that an earlier message from the rescue team to a command centre suggesting that there had been multiple survivors had been a ``miscommunication.''

``What happened was a miscommunication from the rescue team, a miscommunication between that point and the command centre,'' said Hatfield.

The dead men appeared to have been killed by carbon monoxide poisoning, said Hatfield.

The relatives of the dead men, whose hopes were raised by the earlier reports of many survivors, had reason to be angry, said Hatfield. ``These families are grief stricken and frankly angry. They certainly have some basis for their frustration, having been put through this emotional roller coaster,'' said Hatfield.

The bodies of the dead men have yet to be brought to the surface but that process is under way, Hatfield said.

A decorated Vietnam combat veteran who retired as a colonel after 37 years in the U.S. Marine Corps, Murtha told ABC News' "Nightline" program that Iraq "absolutely" was a wrong war for President George W. Bush to have launched.

"Would you join (the military) today?," he was asked in an interview taped on Friday.

"No," replied Murtha of Pennsylvania, the top Democrat on the House of Representatives subcommittee that oversees defense spending and one of his party's leading spokesmen on military issues.

"And I think you're saying the average guy out there who's considering recruitment is justified in saying 'I don't want to serve'," the interviewer continued.

"Exactly right," said Murtha, who drew White House ire in November after becoming the first ranking Democrat to push for a pullout of U.S. forces from Iraq as soon as it could be done safely.

At the time, White House spokesman Scott McClellan equated Murtha's position with surrendering to terrorists.

Since then, Bush has decried the "defeatism" of some of his political rivals. In an unusually direct appeal, he urged Americans on December 18 not to give in to despair over Iraq, insisting that "we are winning" despite a tougher-than-expected fight.

Murtha did not respond directly when asked whether a lack of combat experience might have affected the decision-making of Bush, Vice President Dick Cheney, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld and their former top deputies.

"Let me tell you, war is a nasty business. It sears the soul," he said, choking up. "And it made a difference. The shadow of those killings stay with you the rest of your life."

Asked for comment, a Defense Department spokesman, Lt. Col. John Skinner, said: "We have an all-volunteer military. People are free to choose whether they serve or not."

"Our freedom of speech in this country allows all of us the opportunity to voice an opinion. It's one of our great strengths as a nation," he added in an e-mailed reply.

The White House had no immediate comment.

Congress will have a lot to say about that, of course, but the White House deserves credit for daring to venture into this political thicket and come up with an idea that points to the future.

On. Dec. 22, the President's Task Force on Puerto Rico's Status, after years of hearings and study, issued a long-awaited report intended to arouse congressional action on Puerto Rico. The main recommendation is that Congress should tackle the status issue this year and allow Puerto Rico's voters to decide whether they wish to retain the current 'commonwealth'' status or move to either independence or statehood.

No consensus

The report is an effort to cut through the vexing knots that have kept Puerto Rico's political status in a tangle for decades. Clearly, many Puerto Ricans are comfortable with the status quo. Yet a series of Puerto Rico-initiated plebiscites in recent years has failed to produce a consensus while revealing significant pro-statehood sentiment. Because the island's status is considered ''indefinite'' -- as opposed to the ''permanent'' options of statehood or independence -- a periodic plebiscite is deemed necessary to measure public opinion.

Endorsing the call for a plebiscite does not mean turning a blind eye to the political machinations behind the move. The report proposes two rounds of voting, in which the first plebiscite would be a simple up-or-down vote on the current status. Commonwealth supporters, led by Gov. AnÃbal Acevedo VilÃ¡ of the Popular Democratic Party, see this as a trap in which supporters of the current status would be pitted unfairly against the combined vote of the independentistas and those who favor statehood.

Self-determination

Statehood supporters believe they would prevail in a subsequent round that gives voters a choice between independence or becoming the 51st state. Perhaps designing the plebiscite in some other way would be more fair to all factions, but it is hard to argue with the notion of a vote for self-determination that Congress would promise to abide by.

Commonwealth leaders believe the majority of Puerto Rico's four million people are content with the status quo. If they're right, they should not fear a fair and properly worded plebiscite, but they should prepare for a strong challenge. Congress can choose to drag its feet or ignore the report altogether, but either choice would be wrong. The best way to settle the status issue is a fairly designed referendum that allows the people of Puerto Rico to decide their own future.

Umm, they voted on this back in 1998, and the results were what it still is and has always been since being established remaining a Commonwealth. To me, if they do vote again I don't think much will change because from what I hear most Puerto Ricans that live there are still complacent with what they have and the status of the island as is so I guess we'll just have to wait and see where this whole thing goes. I knew this issue was going to come up again sooner or later because Puerto Rico is in a lot of trouble right now so I don't want to hear another "It's Bush's Fault" shit again, though there is one gov official of the island recently who says that they should file a lawsuit against the US which is just rediculous, but I'm not surprised most of the gov officials there are all corrupt anyway and bitch at everything. sound familiar?

"This year we watched the Iraqi people defy the terrorists and suicide bombers and hold three successful elections, voting to choose the only constitutional, democratic government in the Arab world," Bush said." We also saw the people of Afghanistan elect a democratic parliament in a nation that only a few years ago was ruled by the Taliban.

"These are amazing achievements in the history of liberty," Bush said. "As freedom and democracy take hold in a troubled region, we are making the American people safer here at home and laying the foundation of peace for future generations."

Bush emphasized that the U.S. has a vital interest in the success of a free Iraq. In the year ahead, he said, the United States will continue to pursue a comprehensive strategy for victory that includes security, political and economic elements.

He said the coalition is staying on the offense, finding and clearing the enemy out of Iraqi cities, towns and villages. More control is being transferred to Iraqi units, and the U.S. is building up the Iraqi security forces so they can increasingly lead the fight to secure their country.

"We are helping Iraqis build the political institutions of an inclusive, unified and lasting democracy," the president said. "And, our coalition is overcoming earlier setbacks and moving forward with a reconstruction plan to rebuild Iraq's economy and infrastructure.

"As we help Iraq build a peaceful and stable democracy, the United States will gain an ally in the war on terror, inspire reformers across the Middle East, and make the American people more secure," Bush said.

You know, many people say that Bush isn't a good communicator or that he's dumb, but to me he is a good communicator and doesn't fake it when he talks. I mean sure he may have his moments, but like the speech today and many others, he shows that he really cares as a president and as a person for this country and it's citizens. He shows compassion for the families who have loved ones over seas, and the troops who are every day sacrificing themselves for us to protect our freedoms and help others to have freedom.

That's how a president is suppose to be at a time of war.

Two weeks ago, Murtha created a storm of comment when he called for U.S. troops to leave Iraq now. The Democratic congressman spoke to a group of community and business leaders in Latrobe on Wednesday, the same day President Bush said troops would be withdrawn when they've achieved victory, not under an artificial deadline set by politicians.

Murtha predicted most troops will be out of Iraq within a year.

"I predict he'll make it look like we're staying the course," Murtha said, referring to Bush. "Staying the course is not a policy."

Murtha, 73, the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations defense subcommittee, expressed pessimism about Iraq's stability and said the Iraqis know who the insurgents are, but don't always share that information with U.S. troops. He said a civil war is likely because of ongoing factionalism among Sunni Arabs, and Kurds and Shiites.

He also said he was wrong to vote to support the war.

"I admit I made a mistake when I voted for war," Murtha said. "I'm looking at the future of the United States military."

Murtha, a decorated Vietnam war veteran, said the Pennsylvania National Guard is "stretched so thin" that it won't be able to send fully equipped units to Iraq next year. Murtha predicted it will cost $50 billion to upgrade military equipment nationwide, but says the federal government is already reducing future purchases to save money.

Murtha, who represents a western Pennsylvania district that includes Latrobe, was first elected to Congress in 1974.

Lt. Col. Chris Cleaver, spokesman for the Pennsylvania National Guard at Fort Indiantown Gap, said "there are some deployment concerns."

Cleaver said some guard units had to leave equipment in Iraq when they returned to the United States, which could cause training problems here.

But Cleaver also said most of the 2,100 Guard troops now deployed with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team can't be sent back to Iraq for a second tour of duty anyway, because of regulations that limit redeployment.

Four rare battle flags captured during the American War of Independence by a British officer have been returned after more than two centuries to be auctioned.

The regimental colours seized in 1779 and 1780 by Lt Col Banastre Tarleton, who remains one of the conflict's most controversial figures, have already aroused huge interest among American military historians. They are expected to fetch between Â£2.3 million and Â£5.8 million at Sotheby's in New York next year.

Until recently the flags had hung in the Hampshire home of Capt Christopher Tarleton Fagan, the great-great-great-great nephew of the lieutenant colonel.

Capt Tarleton Fagan, a former Grenadier Guards officer, said: "I am very sad to sell them. They are an important part of our family history and we have had them for 225 years. However, there comes a time when their value is such that one can no longer afford to insure them."

Only about 30 American revolutionary battle flags have survived, all of which, apart from the ones to be sold at Sotheby's, are in museums and in most cases only fragments remain. The ones captured by Tarleton are in excellent condition and their history is well documented. One is the flag of the 2nd Regiment of Continental Light Dragoons, raised in Connecticut by Col Elisha Sheldon, who were defeated by Tarleton in Westchester County, New York in July 1779. The other three flags were seized the following year in a still controversial battle in the southern United States.

Tarleton crushed a Virginian regiment under Col Abraham Buford at Waxsaws near the border of North and South Carolina. Accounts of what happened next differ. According to the Americans, Tarleton ordered his men to slaughter more than 100 revolutionary soldiers who had already surrendered. But the British officer maintained that his horse was shot after a truce was declared and pinned him to the ground.

Well, looks like PR is back to promoting the island with it's great TV ads like the one's from the 90's, you know "The Shining Star". Except this time, the promoting is more complicated due to the fact that the island is basically in a time where there is just too much corruption and confusion from within it's own government. So, again tell me why people are going to go to PR knowing that there is so much violence there??

Because no matter what, they will always have tourism there for the mere fact that it's a US territory, but an island in the Caribbean which = $$$.

Still, though like I said..there's so much going on. With the pathetic crime rate it's basically worse then in most major cities in the actual states. Can't even go out in the day time without someone killing someone for a petty thing like $5.00.
What's worse is the drug situation I mean you have these drug lords staying in the poor areas so they can hide out and not be caught by the government with the corrupted cops who get paid by these druggies to not rat them out. It's just really sad on what's happening over there..and that's why I'm a bit surprised about the new promotions/ads that they are going to run soon.

I still wish I was a kid at this time just so I can go dress up and get candy.
